Elizabeth Wright Enright Gillham was born in Oak Park, Illinois, as daughter of Maginel Wright Enright, a book and magazine illustrator. Preparing for a career as an illustrator, Enright studied at the Art Students League of New York and at the Parsons School of Design, Paris. She also reviewed children's literature for The New York Times, taught creative writing at Barnard College and led writing seminars at colleges across the U.S.A..
Beginning as a magazine illustrator, in 1935 her first book, Kintu: A Congo Adventure was published. After 1951 her children's books were illustrated by other artists.
